H.M.S. Chess Club

As the school year 2002–2003 was drawing to a close, a small group of students became very interested in playing chess.  At the beginning of the 2003–2004 school year we began to develop the criteria needed to begin a Chess Club.  The Chess Club started with fifteen students.  Presently we have twenty-four students participating and a waiting list of students who want to join. The Chess Club meets every Wednesday during enrichment class.  Players are now being ranked, and a tournament is being planned at the beginning of the second semester.  Math, higher-order thinking, evaluation, and strategy are just a few of the skills that are developed and challenged in the game of chess.  We would like to encourage other schools in our county to develop a Chess Club.  This would enable all students in the county who are interested to experience the world of chess.
