GENERAL SCIENCE LAB SAFETY RULES

    One of the first things a scientist learns is that working in the laboratory can also be quite dangerous if proper safety rules are not followed at all times.  To prepare your child for a safe year in lab class, read over the following safety rules with your child.

 

    By learning and following these rules, your child can help to insure their own safety as well as that of their classmates.  Only when every student in the class is obeying rules can learning take place and everyone’s welfare be protected.

 

GENERAL SAFETY RULES:

 

  1. Before beginning, it is your responsibility to read all directions for an experiment/activity and follow directions exactly.  If you are in doubt about any part of the activity, ask your teacher for assistance.

 

  1. Never perform experiments/activities that are not authorized by your teacher.  Obtain permission before “experimenting” on your own.

 

  1. Never handle any equipment unless you have specific permission.

 

  1. Take extreme care not to spill any material in lab class.  If a spill occurs, immediately ask your teacher about the proper cleanup procedure.  Never simply pour substances into the sink or trash can.

 

  1. Immediately report all accidents, no matter how minor, to your teacher.

 

  1. Your work area should always be kept uncluttered.

 

  1. There should be no horseplay at any time.

 

  1. At the end of class period, all equipment and materials should be properly put away.

 

  1. Never mix substances without permission

 

  1. Never touch, taste, or smell any substance or material unless you are instructed by your teacher to do so.

 

  1. Do not inhale fumes directly from containers.

 

  1. Keep all lids closed on containers when substances are not being used.  Notify your teacher whenever a substance is spilled.

 

  1. Never pour substances back into their original containers, unless instructed to do so by your teacher.

 

  1. Immediately rinse with water any substance that gets on your skin or clothing and notify your teacher.

 

  1. If glassware breaks, notify your teacher immediately.

 

  1. Never eat or drink from laboratory containers. 

 

  1. Handle sharp objects with extreme care.  Never cut material toward you; cut away from you.

 

  1. Immediately notify your teacher if you cut yourself when working in lab class.

 

  1. After an experiment/activity is completed, return all equipment and materials to their proper place and clean up your work area.

 

  1. Clean your hands and work area using antibacterial hand wipes after every lab experiment/activity.

 

STUDENTS WILL BE GRADED ON THEIR PERFORMANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN LAB CLASS.  ANY STUDENT WHO DOES NOT FOLLOW THESE RULES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE REMAINDER OF CLASS, THEREFORE RECEIVING A GRADE OF ZERO FOR THAT DAY.

recognize that lab class is a safe place in which to work and learn if I conduct myself in a responsible manner.  I agree to observe and follow the lab class safety rules and follow the teacher’s instructions at all times.  In addition, I will also abide by the following rules:

 

I will handle all lab class materials and equipment properly.

 

I will familiarize myself with the lab class techniques and procedures involved in each assignment before I attempt to perform the activity.

 

I will report any accident to the teacher immediately.

 

After each assignment/activity has been completed, I will dispose of all waste according to the teacher’s directions, return all materials and equipment to their proper place, and clean my hands and work area.
